Beginning in the middle of May 2021, a sudden surge in Covid-19 infections disrupted everyday life in Taiwan. Undaunted, companies operating in the Hsinchu Science Park (HSP) went on to chalk up record sales in the first half of the year. Thanks to a gradually rising vaccination rate, the world economy was able to recover steadily. Electronics and ICT products enjoyed specially strong growth momentum on the back of sustained demand for such emerging technology applications as 5G and high-performance computing, as well as still robust growth in both the stay-at-home economy and the automobile industry. In the first six months of 2021, the HSP recorded year-on-year increases of 31.42% and 32.50% in sales and exports respectively to NT$743.972 billion and NT$746.899 billion, both all-time highs. Exceptionally robust demand for raw materials and electronic components and parts also fueled a 22.82% jump in imports to NT$287.397 billion.

Of the HSP’s six primary industries, optoelectronics registered the biggest increase of 43.77% and the computer/peripherals and microchip industries trailed behind with 37.43% and 31.67% respectively. Next came biotechnology, communications, and precision machinery that grew 14.88%, 12.83%, and 8.55% respectively.

Taiwan is both home to cutting-edge R&D in such areas as semiconductor, 5G, AI, and IoT and a regional hub for the technology sector’s supply chain. HSP companies have contributed immensely to Taiwan’s international dominance on this front over the past four decades and are set to play an equally important role in ranking the country among the world’s technology superpowers going forward.
